Back to Full Blog

I would like to start this post by thanking all of you for the support you have shown me and my family through this very long and frightening weekend. Your prayers, positive thoughts and concern over my son's condition meant more to us than I can express. It kinda sucks that I can talk a blue streak about virtually nothing, but had to start this post a dozen times to thank all of you. I just can't find adequate words. Ya'll are the best people I have ever known, and you mean the world to me.

It took the better part of two and a half days----and every test the hospital could do----to find out that he had viral encephalitis.
He could not tell them how he was feeling when the ambulance picked him up. He couldn't even tell them his name. All he could say was "I can't get it straight." He couldn't walk, and was in and out of consciousness.
They told me he "climbed the walls" in ICU when they tried to draw blood and insert a catheter. They had to restrain him with wrist restraints and a sheet tied to the bed to hold his chest down. He was "combative" and "agitated". And he used every dirty word he knew. This earned him another round of sedatives. He had had three at this point. He would thrash around and pull at his restraints and beg to be turned loose.

And none of that is the son I know.

Sometimes being a mother hurts like all Hell.

Nothing showed up in his bloodwork.
His white cell count didn't indicate any infection.
None of the scans or x-rays showed anything, and they did 'em ALL.
No drugs were found in his system.

They told me they had no idea what was wrong. That scared me stupid. But they decided to do a lumbar puncture, and they found the encephalitis. He went in on Thursday, and we found out Sunday morning.

Youngest looked it up on the internet, and as bad as it was for my son, it could have been so much worse.

And how do you get viral encephalitis? Glad you asked! This is Need-To-Know stuff.

According to the doctor, in this part of the country, the primary cause is mosquito bites. One mosquito knocked him on his butt. He has headaches, and he's weak. He's still not clear-headed, and he cannot remember much about the last three or four days. After watching what it did to Son I can tell you that this is nothing to play with. Do all you can to avoid mosquito bites. Check your property for standing water and dump it. Please spray your kids with repellant when they go outside. Spray the bushes around your yard with insecticide. Whatever it takes.

Damn a mosquito.

Slick:

That's a terrible experience for all of you, but now you know the cause. I am going outside and check all the open containers for stagnant water. Thanks for the warning, and I am happy your son is recovering.

Does this leave any after effects on the brain Slick? I'm just curious.

And uh-huh, I just checked out where you live,..So. GA...I'm originally from FL myself where yeh, mosquitoes are definitely a problem. At the preschool where we worked we were always having to check the playground for standing water...one place you have to look is the tire swings! We had ones that sat horizontal and rain would find its way into the tires that was as well as the swing that hung vertical. Needless-to-say as a mom to three young kids early on, since it ALWAYS rained in the afternoon, the next morning I'd do my standing water search..as there were all kinds of places for it to...stand! (We had the usual kid crap in our back yard.)

Well...I'll be checking in on you to see how your son is. And I hope he has a speedy and total recovery!!!!

They said that it cannot be cured; they can only manage it. I hope to find out more when he goes to the doctor next week. He tires easily, and is still having trouble thinking, but the doctors say that he still has a lot of sedatives in his system.
I was born and raised in Plant City, Florida myself, so skeeters and I go way back. I remember having to go inside when the mosquito truck came through the neighborhood. And Momma was constantly on alert for mosquitos. I never thought I'd miss the mosquito truck.

Thank you Miss Lou. He's still in rough shape, but we are praying he'll be much better before too long.

And if you can Whit, swat every danged mosquito you find for me! It's one of those things you never see happening to you, it's always someone else. But this "someone else" is mine. Pass this warning on to everyone!

It's like I've said before Azron: Our lives click along, and we don't think about all of the what-if's, but one turn of the cards, or one roll of the dice, and our lives change dramatically. And if something happens to someone we love, our lives change with theirs. Life is very FRAGILE.

Thank you so much for your concern, Bonniy! And thank you for your prayers. If you don't mind my asking, what problems is she still having? My son's doctor said that there really is no cure, that all they can do is manage it from here on. It's scaring this momma to death.

I was almost going to mention the mosq. trucks myself!!! But then I thought...wait, am I remembering correctly??? Or am I imagining that?

You validated my memories.

This happened when we lived in Tallahassee...not so much in St Pete...to the best of my memory (which becomes more and more shoddy each day.)

All the best to your son.

Hey Bev! I've seen all three of my kids go through bad times, but this knocked me to my knees. That's the wonderful thing I've found here on the Stream: Praying people and people who really care. I've been blessed by being here. Thank you so much Beverly. And watch out for those hateful mesquitos. I know God had a purpose for them, but I'll be dipped if I can figger that out.

Yes Ma'am, Rubble! You are remembering correctly! The skeeter truck would come through the neighborhood and all the mothers would call us in so we wouldn't get sprayed. And it smelled BAD! We'd see it coming and know playtime was over. I'll pass all of the comments and prayers on to my son. He and his wife read my blog, but it's kinda hard for him to read right now. I'll be glad to see my cantankerous boy again.

WHAT a NIGHTMARE! So glad they found it! And thank you for sharing the info. Where we live (near an airport and by a main freeway) mosquitos are not around much. However, there are other places we go...

I pray he recovers quickly.

As fragile as is the human body, I hope and pray your son's spirit is strong. (If he takes after his mom, there can be no doubt of that.)

For what it's worth, my oldest son contracted meningitis when he was about ten months old and the doctors told us he had a 50-50 chance of surviving the night. That was thirty-one years ago and when I am wise, I thank God for every day since.

I just was on line with MSNBC news - they are predicting a flood stage of over 100 feet on the Mississippi through Cedar Falls, IA and maybe Des Moines as well. They are very concerned about dams giving way - and that would be a major disaster.

From what I've seen so far, it's already a disaster. If the dams break it will be Katrina all over again. On a larger scale. Katrina proved that we don't do Major Disasters too well. Time to take it to a Higher Power.

Thank you Lonewolfchronicles! And welcome to my blog. I usually try to keep it light, but this episode really got to me. My son is tougher than he knows; he's weathered some bad times in his life. Lot's of pain and heartache.

Thank you for sharing what your son went through. It's easy to forget that so many other parents have gone through nightmarish times with sick children. My son is 28 yrs old, but I didn't think about that at the time. He may as well have been a baby. And at one point, he begged me to take off the restraints, and he talked like he was maybe eight years old. I was blessed with three children, and they are my greatest treasure. God has been better to me than I deserve.

Hello HeatherScot! This WAS a nightmare, and I wouldn't wish it off on anyone. And believe me when I say that I have enemies! One of my husband's buddies said that his place was over-run with skeeters, but he couldn't figure out where they were coming from. He found them on the underside of the leaves in his hedge. He sprayed so much poison that I am surprised that there are any left in the state of Georgia.

Thank you for the prayers, we nevr turn those down!

Well hello, Tina_sa, and welcome to the blog!! Thank you for your kind words! He tires very easily, and I've been told that it will take a long time for him to get over this, but we'll get through it one day at a time. He's got a lot of people who love him, and a lot of prayers have gone up for him, so we'll be lookin' for the best!
