Peanuts In My Pepsi

 The Third Of July
Back to Full Blog

Wow.

July 3, 2008.

I got up today, got dressed in sneakers, jeans, and a decent shirt, and drove to my somewhat low-paying job.
I didn't have to put on a veil, a head scarve, or a burka.
And I did NOT have to be escorted by a male relative.
Which was great for me because my nearest male relative (my husband) is on my crumb list. BIG TIME!
We have had one heck of a fight, but he cannot have me stoned, beaten, or decapitated. 'Cause the laws of this country say he can't!
Another plus!
While I was on the job, I got into two seperate discussions about government and the current leadership of this country.
Nobody is going to beat my door down and haul me off to be shot, even if they want to. And if they HAD heard me, they would!
I can say whatever I want to, anywhere I want to, and there ain't one pea-pickin' thing anybody can do about it.
I went to Wal-Mart, and bought what I wanted. Well, not EVERYTHING I wanted, but I can be stupid about my money if I so desire.
And I am writing this on my new keyboard, that I got with my new computer! Yippee for moi!
And this is a dandy computer! I can surf the net and see whatever I want to. I can do whatever I want to with it.
And I'm gonna post this little piece of drivel. And if YOU want to read it or anything else on the net, you can do that, too!
If I feel like it I may do some pen and ink work. The subject matter is my call, and mine alone. It may be subversive, or pornagraphic in someone's opinion.
If you don't like it, that's okay. Free speech and all that.
I can sleep tonight in relative peace and security, because there are people out there who will protect me and mine as far as they are capable.
But if the worst should happen, we have protection in this house. Lots of it.
Tomorrow, me and T-Bird might drive to another county to see what is supposed to be a great fireworks display.
We have the right to do this, and even though I am certain that there will be a roadblock or two between here and there,
we will be allowed to proceed. As long as we are not posing some sort of threat to other folks.
A co-worker is spending a couple of weeks in Europe; she can go to wherever her husbands cash flow will allow, and trust me, she will.
Then she'll come back to the Good Old U.S. of A., whether I want her to or not. And I don't.
And Sunday morning, I can go worship the way I want to, and I can believe what strikes a chord in my soul.
I can pray to my God. It may not be what you believe, but you go do whatever it is that your faith calls for.
If you want to.
Or go fishin'.

It may not look like much of a life to you.
Sometimes, it doesn't look like much of a life to me.
But if the opportunity presents itself, I can change it for the better.
And I can work for a change of life for all of us, if I see a way to do it.

All because, generations ago, a group of people decided to make their own way, and their own country.
And it was cemented by thousands of flag-draped caskets, and millions of mother's tears.

Is it a perfect country? Nope.

But it's the best one we've got. It STILL has possibilities.

Have a wonderful Fourth of July ya'll. And stay safe.

Many a person has said you can tell a lot about a country by how many people want in as opposed to how many want out. I would say in that respect the US remains number one by a long way.

Well, Slick....I couldn't have said it better myself....and you know how into "words" I am lately. Perfectly written and perfectly timed.
America.......the BEST there is!! Thank God I was born here, all because my ancestors decided "Enough is ENOUGH" and hopped on a boat to come to this unknown land.
Once here, they worked together to form this country's ideals and goals and CONSTITUTION.......AND, they did a pretty darn good job of it! Many of the planners lost all they had, some died and so did their families, but thank GOD they stuck it out! They gave their all
to create "The Land of the Free and the Brave".
Tonight when I view the fireworks display, I will remember these brave unselfish people and NOT the crappy politicians that "pretend" to serve us while helping themselves to the WHOLE apple pie.

Happy 4th! I'll be working......hey, SOMEBODY'S got to!
Blessings
Beverly

Happy Fourth Of July, Lonewolf! If they ever try to throw me out of this country, there'll be claw marks on the shore where I left kickin' and screamin'! I hate to hear celebs say that if so-and-so happens, they'll take off to some other country. If they have any influence or pull, why not stick around and use whatever they have here in the US to make it better?

Happy Fourth, Bev! Like the sayin' goes: American By The Grace Of God! What the Founding Fathers did was pure treason, punishable by death, and this whole system was a brand new idea. It took guts, and a vision of a better life. And untold amounts of blood and sweat, and tears. I used to think of this country as the government and a set of borders until 9-11. That's a pretty narrow view. Thanks to the terrorists, I started to see this country for what it really is: It's me and you, Girl, and our families, our neighbors. My neighbors go from border to border and all points in between. I'm starting to think of our leaders as the same kind of trash that we were getting away from back in 1776. And check it out: we out-number them! So, if we can manage it, T-Bird and I are gonna go celebrate in lil' ole Enigma, Georgia, with Our Fellow Americans. We ARE America.

HAPPY FOURTH, Azron! Oh yeah, I wrote it. I wasn't happy with it but I posted it anyhoo. I could go on to the point of being long-winded, but it was late and I was wore slap out.
If we look at the simple parts of our lives as Americans, and goodness knows I'm simple, we have more freedom than we think we do. If we feel that we've lost some of our liberties we can take them back when we're fed-up. It's what Americans do.
What I posted is just my little slice of this country; we ALL have a slice of it. Have a safe, happy Fourth ya'll! And be proud of what this place really is!

That's the joy of NOT being the brightest bulb on the string Ron--------I'm not smart enough to make up a plausible lie! Like one buddy said: this is just me, warts and all!

Well thank you Ron! I've had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the uppercrust of local society, but I always feel the need to bathe afterwards. Most of the ones I've talked to wouldn't know the truth or the plain facts if they met 'em in a ten-acre field! Always tryin' to be like something they aren't. Life's too short for games.

Slick - a great post and a good reminder to all of us. Seems we should have heap more gratitude than we do and bury our grumblings deep under the sea. I work with African refugees - believe I know more about their lives than i ever wish to expereince even in a small part.

Sounds like your family has had its ups and downs - I can relate a bit to some of the stuff, Trust that you will definitely find security in your faith walk. june

That's right Ron! I find that if I look hard enough I can usually find somethin' likeable in most people. And of course I have people in my life who have aspects that I don't care for, so I avoid those things and love the rest of who they are. If I didn't, I wouldn't even have family in my life anymore! But if someone doesn't care for my company, that's nooooooo problem!

Why thank you June! This country was a blessing---not some sort of curse. We have problems that we can fix, and American Ingenuity can't be beat. Like you mentioned with African refugees, there are things going on in the rest of this world that we just do not want going on here, and other countries go through things that, Praise His Name, we don't even have to think about.
As for my family, ups and downs are just life, and we can get through it. We blew a Perfect Existance back in the Garden, and God never promised us Easy Street. He just promised to be there, and that's good enough for me!

HEY CRACKER!!!! I didn't think that post was all that great, but I wanted to say SOMETHING about the holiday, because since 9-11 it means so much more to me than it used to. Almost everything in our lives is protected to a degree, because of someone's sacrifice along the line. It may be a small sacrifice or it may be the sacrifice of one's own life, but because of those sacrifices, I can write what you just read. You have a fantastic holiday, and be careful! We still don't have a lot of protection against people being stupid, but we're workin' on it!
